Spectra Logic has announced several new enhancements to the software for its converged storage system.
BlackPearl 5.0 software now offers intelligent object management. This includes functionality that enables files to self-heal all copies across all media if a problem is detected. There’s also automatic consolidation of data on fragmented tapes, enabling the system to reclaim deleted tape storage capacity.
Furthermore, the new software allows data to be migrated from one storage type to another quickly and transparently. Spectra says this ensures data integrity while reducing costs.
Other enhancements include S3 object versioning which means multiple versions of the same file can be uploaded and saved on BlackPearl, ensuring customers do not lose data; data staging which allows pre-staging of data from tape to disk and cuts wait times to use assets while taking advantage of tape’s cost savings; and “Intelligent Chunk Aggregation”.
Spectra says the latter reduces tape mounts and improves tape throughput performance by identifying and grouping files together when writing to or reading from tape
In addition to the software feature enhancements, the company has also added 12TB enterprise disk drives to its disk products including the ArcticBlue (pictured).
Spectra claims ArcticBlue provides object-based disk storage that delivers online long-term disk storage for the price of tape. It says the 12TB drive extends storage capacities to more than 10PB in a single system.
