Swarm to power BT’s global cloud storage service

Caringo offered the rich feature set BT needed, according to Neil Lock.

BT has implemented Caringo Swarm as the object-based storage component of its Compute Storage offerings, extending storage, data protection and sharing to customers across the globe.

Caringo says Swarm decouples data from applications and hardware, and provides a foundation for continued data access and analysis that constantly evolves while guaranteeing data integrity.

“Object-based storage is a great way to make data accessible on any device to better support an organisation’s BYOD strategy, whether it’s for long-term backup or file sync-and-share services in the cloud,” says Neil Lock, VP of compute at BT global services. “Swarm offers a rich feature set and the resilience that we need to ensure our customers have the security and reliability they demand.”

The telco claims its platform gives customers all the benefits of cloud storage with enhanced security and durability. With enterprise-class, end-to-end protection, performance and reliability, BT says Compute Storage with Caringo Swarm makes it easy for users to host sensitive data in their country while meeting rigorous compliance regulations.

According to BT, its Compute Storage platform is “secure to the core”. The firm says it includes: end-to-end encryption using AES 2048-bit; hashed and validated data using SHA-1 fingerprinting to prevent tampering; and privately held encryption keys for Amazon S3 compatibility and BT SCSP object storage access APIs.

BT adds that users also benefit from dedicated, isolated data storage areas that remove the risk of leakage, as well as storage in its “state-of-the-art” facilities that are under round the clock surveillance with authorised-only access.

Using Caringo for its Compute Storage system is the first part of BT’s Cloud of Clouds approach that was launched earlier this year (see p6, Apr 2015 issue). Dedicated nodes are available in the UK and Germany, with planned expansion to all 18 countries in which BT’s IaaS platform is hosted (Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa and the Americas).
